Unit 3: Letter-Sound Phonics

Learning Outcome (NCF & NEP ECCE)

Children will:
  • Hear and say the beginning sound for common letters.
  • Connect each letter to at least one familiar picture/word by sound (not spelling).
  • Practise listening, speaking, circling, and simple drawing to reinforce phonics.
  • Build confidence with sound games, actions, and picture-based activities.

Let's Listen to Sounds

Instruction: "Look at the pictures. Say their names: sun, ball, cat, dog, apple, fan. Listen to the first sound: sss-un, bbb-all, ccc-at..."
Sun, Ball, Cat, Dog, Apple, Fan
Sun, Ball, Cat, Dog, Apple, Fan

Draw circles around pictures, practice first sounds

Say each word slowly, stretching the first sound (sss, bbb, ccc). Let children repeat just the first sound, then the whole word.

Say the wrong option on purpose once and let children "correct" you. This builds confidence.
End of Unit Teacher's Note: Keep phonics playful and oral, not stressful. Use songs, chants, and daily "sound hunts" in class. Focus on clear, pure sounds (not "buh, cuh") and lots of repetition. Children may move at different speeds; value participation and effort over correctness.
